Description
17-Hydroxyprogesterone is an intermediate in the steroid hormone synthesis pathway of the adrenal cortex. It is formed from progesterone by the enzyme 17a-hydroxylase. 17-OHP is a precursor of deoxycortisol as well as androstenedione, into which it is metabolized by other specific enzymes. The test is used for the diagnosis and monitoring of treatment of adrenal cortical hyperplasia, including in patients receiving glucocorticoids.
