Adrenocorticotropic hormone (ACTH)

Description

A polypeptide hormone produced by the anterior lobe of the pituitary gland under the influence of hypothalamic tropic factors. Main functions: stimulation of the adrenal cortex and its production of corticosteroid hormones (in particular, cortisol). Under the influence of the hormone, insulin is released by the beta cells of the pancreas; due to its melanocyte-stimulating action, skin pigmentation is enhanced. The hormone has a circadian secretion rhythm with maximum concentration in the blood in the morning (6-8 a.m.) and minimum levels in the evening (10 p.m.). Under stressful situations, trauma, physical exertion, and pregnancy, the blood concentration increases.
