Alanine aminotransferase (ALT)

Description

An enzyme contained in all cells of the body, primarily in liver tissue; a lower level of activity is noted in the cells of the heart, skeletal muscles, and kidneys. It belongs to the class of transaminases and performs the important function of transferring amino groups from amino acids to keto acids. The ALT level has significant diagnostic value in liver diseases, less so in myocardial infarction, since ALT activity in cardiomyocytes is somewhat lower than that of other transaminases. As a result of pathological processes, ALT enters the blood from the intracellular fluid, and enzyme activity there can increase several times, sometimes tenfold, depending on the severity of cytolysis (the process of cell destruction). The level of enzyme activity in hepatitis indicates the activity of the process in the liver; in myocardial infarction, it is an indirect indicator of the extent of heart muscle damage.
