Description
A steroid hormone synthesized from cholesterol in the cells of the zona glomerulosa of the adrenal cortex. It is metabolized in the liver and kidneys. The synthesis and release of aldosterone into the blood depend on the activity of the renin-angiotensin system, the levels of potassium and sodium in the blood, and ACTH. Its main functions are the regulation of water-salt metabolism and the maintenance of blood pressure. The release of aldosterone into the blood follows a circadian rhythm, with peak concentrations in the morning and minimal levels after 11 p.m. Plasma aldosterone levels decrease with age.
Blood samples should preferably be collected between 7 and 10 a.m.
