Description
Penicillin G (or benzylpenicillin) belongs to the group of penicillins – a broad-spectrum antibacterial agent. The allergic reaction proceeds according to the cytotoxic (cytolytic) type involving IgG class antibodies that bind to cell membranes, leading to cell destruction. Allergy to ampicillin occurs frequently and manifests as atopic dermatitis, urticaria, Quincke's edema, allergic rhinitis, and allergic conjunctivitis. Cross-allergic reactions to cephalosporins, monobactams, and carbapenems are very often observed. Determination of specific immunoglobulin G is used for the diagnosis of delayed allergic reactions, as well as for monitoring the therapy conducted.
