Description
Penicillin V (phenoxymethylpenicillin) belongs to the group of penicillins – a broad-spectrum antibacterial agent. Penicillin allergy can manifest as an immediate IgE-mediated hypersensitivity reaction within one hour after administration, or a delayed IgG-mediated reaction that can appear after several days. The allergic reaction follows the cytotoxic (cytolytic) type involving IgG class antibodies that bind to cell membranes, leading to cell destruction. Determination of specific immunoglobulin G is used for the diagnosis of delayed allergic reactions, as well as for monitoring the therapy conducted.
