Description
Ampicillin belongs to the group of penicillins – a broad-spectrum antibacterial agent. The allergic reaction proceeds according to the cytotoxic (cytolytic) type involving class IgG antibodies, which bind to cell membranes, leading to cell destruction. Allergy to ampicillin is common and manifests as atopic dermatitis, urticaria, Quincke's edema, allergic rhinitis, and allergic conjunctivitis. Cross-allergic reactions to cephalosporins, monobactams, and carbapenems are observed very often. Determination of specific immunoglobulin G is used for the diagnosis of delayed allergic reactions, as well as for monitoring therapy.
