Description
An enzyme produced by the pancreas and salivary glands, the function of which is the breakdown of carbohydrates. In acute diseases of the pancreas, significant amounts of amylase are detected in the blood and excreted by the kidneys in the urine; therefore, the level of amylase in urine, in the absence of salivary gland pathology, is a marker of pancreatic damage. This test is very often used to diagnose acute or chronic pancreatitis.
