Description
Amylase is an enzyme belonging to the class of hydrolases and produced by the pancreas (P-type) and salivary glands (S-type), the main function of which is the breakdown of dietary carbohydrates, mainly starch and glycogen, into simpler compounds. Determination of amylase levels in serum is used primarily for the diagnosis of pancreatic diseases. Increased enzyme activity in serum may indicate the presence of an acute pathological process in the pancreas, even when its level in urine is normal.
