Description
A fraction of total amylase synthesized only in the pancreas (P-type enzyme). It is secreted into the intestinal lumen, where it breaks down polysaccharides into mono- and disaccharides. It has important diagnostic value in acute and chronic pancreatitis, possessing greater sensitivity and specificity than total amylase in serum and urine.
