Description
The main product of dihydrotestosterone conversion during its metabolism in skin cells. The test is used to assess peripheral androgen metabolism, specifically testosterone and dihydrotestosterone. The enzyme 5-alpha-reductase metabolizes testosterone into dihydrotestosterone in skin hair follicle cells, which in turn affects hair growth activity. With increased activity of this enzyme, a large amount of active dihydrotestosterone is formed in hair follicle cells, which, upon breakdown, converts into androstenediol glucuronide. The amount of androstenediol glucuronide formed provides an indirect indication of 5-alpha-reductase activity, the level of dihydrotestosterone metabolism, and the level of androgen influence on hair growth. The test is of particular importance for establishing the causes of hirsutism in women with normal blood levels of testosterone and dihydrotestosterone.
