Description
Antistreptolysin O is a group of antibodies produced in response to streptolysin, an enzyme produced by certain groups of beta-hemolytic streptococcus. Antistreptolysin can be considered as a specific marker of streptococcal infection in the body. The diagnostic value of this test is high in rheumatism. The level of antistreptolysin is one of the criteria for assessing the activity of the rheumatic process and for the differential diagnosis of rheumatism and rheumatoid arthritis. The most informative are the results of several tests for antistreptolysin performed at a certain time interval (usually 7-10 days).
