Description
Brucellosis (Maltese, Mediterranean, Gibraltar, Cyprus, undulant, typhoid-malarial fever, Bang's disease) is an infectious disease from the group of bacterial zoonoses, caused by microorganisms of the genus Brucella. Pathogenic to humans are B. melitensis, Br. abortus, Br. suis. Human infection occurs predominantly via the alimentary route, less commonly by contact or aerogenic routes. It is a systemic infectious-allergic disease with a tendency toward a chronic relapsing course, primarily affecting the musculoskeletal, nervous, and genitourinary systems of the body. Depending on the clinical picture, acute, subacute, chronic, and residual forms of brucellosis are distinguished. Currently, the most sensitive method is enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA), which is recommended as a rapid method for mass screening.
