Anti-Glutamate Decarboxylase (Anti-GAD) Antibodies, IgG

Description

Antibodies to the main antigen of pancreatic beta-cells - glutamic acid decarboxylase. These antibodies are present in the majority of patients with insulin-dependent diabetes mellitus (type 1), indicating the presence of autoimmune damage to pancreatic beta-cells. In people suffering from type 2 diabetes mellitus (non-insulin-dependent), the presence of antibodies to glutamate decarboxylase indicates an increased risk of the disease transitioning into an insulin-dependent form. In clinically healthy individuals, the presence of anti-GAD antibodies indicates an increased risk of developing diabetes in the future. According to some data, the risk of developing diabetes mellitus in the presence of antibodies to glutamic acid decarboxylase is up to 45%. Clinical manifestations of diabetes mellitus may occur 5-8, sometimes more, years after the appearance of antibodies in the blood; usually, the onset of disease symptoms occurs after the destruction of at least 80% of beta-cells. In the case of examining pregnant women with gestational diabetes mellitus, the study results can help determine the risk of the disease transitioning into a more aggressive form. These antibodies can also be detected in other autoimmune diseases: Sjogren's syndrome, juvenile rheumatoid arthritis, systemic lupus erythematosus, Hashimoto's autoimmune thyroiditis.
