Description
The test is performed to assess the immune response to a current or past infection. Class M immunoglobulins (IgM) are early antibodies that are the first to appear in the blood, but no earlier than 7-14 days after contact with the pathogen; their level then gradually decreases. The presence of IgM indicates recent infection with the SARS-CoV-2 virus and may be considered a laboratory sign of the acute stage of infection. As a rule, during the disease antibodies are produced both to the nucleocapsid (N) and to the spike (S) protein of the coronavirus. Detection of IgM to the spike (S) protein confirms the presence of an immune response to COVID-19 after encountering the virus. The result is reported in a qualitative format: "positive"/"negative".
