Description
A blood test for antibodies to the causative agent of COVID-19 is performed to assess the immune response to a current or prior infection. Immunoglobulins of class G (IgG) begin to appear in the blood approximately 3–4 weeks after infection and may persist for a long time. The presence of IgG indicates a previously experienced infection. As a rule, during the disease, antibodies are produced to both the nucleocapsid (N) and the spike (S) proteins of the coronavirus. Detection of IgG to the spike (S) protein allows assessment of the presence of protective immunity, which may develop both after a previous illness and after vaccination. The result is reported in a qualitative format: "positive"/"negative".
