Antibodies to Leishmania (Leishmania infantum)

Description

Detection of specific antibodies (IgM and IgG) to Leishmania infantum can be used as an additional diagnostic method for visceral leishmaniasis. Leishmaniasis is a protozoan vector-borne disease; Leishmania infantum is the causative agent of visceral leishmaniasis (Mediterranean leishmaniasis, kala-azar). Visceral leishmaniasis is characterized by a chronic course, fever, weight loss, splenomegaly, lymphadenopathy, leukopenia, anemia, hepatosplenomegaly, a significant increase in blood immunoglobulin levels, and the development of secondary infections. In visceral leishmaniasis, the pathogens do not remain at the site of inoculation into the skin but disseminate through the reticuloendothelium of large parenchymal organs — the spleen, liver, and bone marrow. Clinical manifestations are mainly observed in young children. Among adults, individuals with latent infection usually predominate. Leishmania infantum very often affects patients with HIV infection.
