Description
Giardiasis is a common protozoan disease (caused by protozoa). The pathogen is transmitted, most often, through water. In the body, Giardia inhabit the small intestine and can infect the biliary tract. The immune response to the infection is quite pronounced; antibodies to the pathogen appear in the blood on days 10-14 after infection and persist for 2-6 months after treatment. The presence of only IgM antibodies reflects the presence of acute giardiasis with varying degrees of infestation severity. The parallel use of coprological (microscopy) and serological (determination of antibodies, Giardia antigens) diagnostic methods allows for more reliable and effective detection of giardiasis.
