Antibodies to Parvovirus (Parvovirus B19, IgG)

Description

Parvovirus (Parvovirus B19) is one of the smallest DNA viruses of the Parvoviridae family. It has tropism for the membrane receptor of erythrocytes. It causes infectious erythema, joint involvement, and chronic anemia. Parvovirus B19 replicates in erythroblasts, causing transient anemia. The infection can cause serious complications and even lead to a fatal outcome in immunocompromised patients. Transplacental transmission of Parvovirus B19 during pregnancy can lead to inhibition of embryonic erythropoiesis, anemia, hypoxia, hydrops (about 12% of all cases), and even fetal death. The incubation period is 4–14 days (sometimes 3–17). The virus can be detected in serum between the 3rd and 16th day after infection. With the appearance of exanthema, a person ceases to be contagious. Determination of antibodies (IgG, IgM) to Parvovirus B19 by the ELISA method is the most significant method for diagnosing parvovirus infection.
