Description
Human T-lymphotropic virus (HTLV) is a serotype of the T-lymphotropic virus species of the Deltaretrovirus genus. It is associated with malignant neoplasms of lymphoid and hematopoietic tissues, such as T-cell leukemia and T-cell lymphoma. The shorter name is HTLV types 1 and 2. Testing for antibodies to HTLV allows recognizing infected individuals. The infection can be asymptomatic and may persist in this form for a long time; meanwhile, the person acts as a potential spreader of the infection (during blood transfusion or organ donation).
