Description
The enzyme thyroid peroxidase is associated with the granular endoplasmic reticulum of thyroid follicle cells. Its main function is the oxidation of iodides to active iodine, which forms thyroid hormones when combined with thyroglobulin. Determination of the antibody titer to thyroid peroxidase is used to diagnose thyroid diseases caused by autoimmune processes. An increase in the level of these antibodies during pregnancy is an indicator of the risk of developing postpartum thyroiditis in the mother.
