Description
Antibodies to SS-A (Ro) are directed against proteins associated with Y1-Y5 RNA within the spliceosome. These antibodies are most frequently detected in Sjögren's syndrome and systemic lupus erythematosus. In SLE, their production is associated with a specific set of clinical manifestations and laboratory abnormalities: photosensitivity, Sjögren's syndrome, and hyperproduction of rheumatoid factor. The presence of anti-SS-A antibodies in the blood of a pregnant woman is associated with a high risk of developing neonatal lupus syndrome in the child.
