Description
Determination of antibodies to citrullinated vimentin is a highly specific method for diagnosing rheumatoid arthritis (specificity is about 98%). Citrullinated vimentin is synthesized by the endoplasmic reticulum and Golgi complex of macrophages under the regulation of pro-inflammatory and inflammatory cytokines in response to inflammation in the cartilage tissue of joints. This type of antibodies can appear in the blood several years before the appearance of the first clinical signs of rheumatoid arthritis, which allows starting treatment even before the appearance of irreversible changes in the joints.
