Description
Epstein-Barr virus (EBV) belongs to the herpesviruses and is one of the most common viruses among the adult population. The main goal of diagnosis is the differentiation between acute and past infection. The immune response in EBV infection is characterized by the formation of antibodies to capsid (EBV-CA), nuclear (EBNA), and early (EBV-EA) EBV antigens. At the early stage of the disease, IgM and IgG antibodies to the viral capsid antigen are detected. Detection of IgM class antibodies to the capsid antigen (EBV-CA) is considered a reliable indicator of the presence of acute EBV infection. The study is intended for the detection of IgM antibodies in blood serum for the diagnosis of diseases caused by EBV (infectious mononucleosis, Burkitt's lymphoma, nasopharyngeal carcinoma).
