Description
The study is intended for the detection of IgG antibodies to antigens of herpes simplex virus type 1 (Herpes simplex virus 1, HSV-1) and herpes simplex virus type 2 (Herpes simplex virus 2, HSV-2) in blood serum by immunoblotting in persons whose serum gives a positive or indeterminate reaction in ELISA. Herpes simplex virus type 1 is more often localized in the oral, facial, and pharyngeal regions, while herpes simplex virus type 2 more often causes lesions of the anogenital region. More than 90% of the population is infected with HSV-1, whereas antibodies to HSV-2 are found in only 7-20% of the population and more than 20% of the sexually active adult population. Mixed infection of both types occurs in 11%. There is also a high risk of infection of newborns during childbirth. Herpes simplex virus type 2 was found in 86% of all newborns with herpetic infection.
