Description
Avidity of IgG antibodies to Herpes Simplex Virus types 1 and 2 is the overall stability of antibody binding to viral antigens, characterized by low-avidity IgG antibodies in the first weeks and months after primary infection, their gradual disappearance from the blood, and replacement by high-avidity IgG antibodies, which allows distinguishing primary infection from recurrence by determining the avidity index.
This test is used to confirm or exclude recent primary infection with Herpes Simplex Virus type 1 or 2; for differential diagnosis between primary herpes virus infection and reactivation of chronic or latent infection; and to assess the risk of transmission of herpetic infection to the fetus or newborn and the development of virus-associated complications.
The test is ordered when positive or equivocal results for IgG and IgM antibodies to Herpes Simplex Virus are detected, and during examination of pregnant women with suspected primary herpes virus infection.
