Description
The study is intended for the detection of IgM antibodies to antigens of Herpes simplex virus type 1 (HSV-1) and Herpes simplex virus type 2 (HSV-2) in blood serum by immunoblotting method in persons whose serum gives a positive or indeterminate reaction in ELISA. Herpes simplex virus type 1 is more often localized in the oral, facial and pharyngeal regions, while Herpes simplex virus type 2 more often causes damage to the anogenital region. More than 90% of the population is infected with HSV-1, whereas antibodies to HSV-2 are found in only 7-20% of the population and more than 20% of the sexually active adult population. Mixed infection of both types occurs in 11%. There is also a high risk of infection of newborns during delivery. Herpes simplex virus type 2 was detected in 86% of all newborns with herpetic infection.
