Description
Antibodies to the causative agents of bacterial dysentery (Shigella flexneri serotypes 1-5, Shigella flexneri serotype 6, and Shigella sonnei) are specific immunoglobulin proteins produced by the immune system in response to Shigella infection and providing immune protection.
The method is used in the diagnosis of acute forms of dysentery and can be useful for identifying chronic bacteria carriers. An increase in antibody titer begins upon the 5-6th day of the illness, and it decreases within 2 months after the infection. If antibodies persist in high titers for more than 2 months, a transition of the infection to a chronic course can be assumed.
