Description
Antibodies to the core antigen of hepatitis B virus appear first among other antibodies associated with hepatitis B virus in the blood serum of patients with acute and chronic hepatitis B, as well as in convalescents. Total antibodies to the core antigen consist of IgM and IgG. Their determination can be used only for retrospective diagnosis of viral hepatitis B, as testing for HBsAg yields a negative result in 5-10% of patients. To establish the stage of the disease, additional determination of IgM antibodies is necessary.
