The main component of lipoproteins, except for high-density lipoproteins. It is synthesized in the liver and intestine. It promotes the recognition of lipoproteins by cells and their incorporation into membranes. It is a marker of coronary vessel atherosclerosis. It is used to assess the risk of atherosclerotic lesions of the coronary and cerebral arteries.
