Aspartate aminotransferase (AST)

Description

An enzyme found in all cells of the body. It belongs to the class of transaminases and carries out the function of transferring amino groups from amino acids to keto acids. AST activity predominates in the cells of the heart, skeletal muscles, liver, and kidneys. Increased enzyme activity in the blood is one of the markers of myocardial infarction, determining to some extent the prognosis of the disease course and the size of the myocardial damage focus. In liver diseases, the AST level has less diagnostic value, although in active hepatitis and neoplastic processes it can reach significant values. The enzyme also has diagnostic value in skeletal muscle pathology and pancreatic diseases.
