Description
The assessment of androgenic hormone balance in the human body can be indirectly performed using a calculated value - the Free Androgen Index. It is used to determine testosterone status, partly replacing such an indicator as free testosterone in the blood. Most of blood testosterone is bound to plasma proteins (specifically sex hormone-binding globulin and albumin), and the biological effects of the hormone are provided only by its free fraction, accounting for about 3%. Calculation of the index provides information on the ratio of these two fractions, allowing for a general assessment of androgen balance, and in case of significant deviations, to proceed to a more detailed and expensive examination. Calculation of the free androgen index is used in the diagnosis of erectile dysfunction, obesity, osteoporosis, hirsutism, polycystic ovary syndrome, and other diseases.
