Description
The aggregate of blood serum proteins, the main indicator of protein metabolism. Blood serum proteins are synthesized in various organs and perform multiple functions. Albumin constitutes the main mass fraction of total protein (up to 60%) and is synthesized in the liver. Globulins, depending on their fractions, are synthesized in lymphocytes, endocrine organs, and the liver. In the blood, proteins perform the following main functions: transport, colloid-osmotic, buffering, trophic, immune, and ensuring blood coagulation. Examination of the total protein level in serum is necessary for the diagnosis of many pathological conditions where a disturbance of protein metabolism is observed.
