Description
A low-molecular-weight protein that is part of the surface antigens of cell nuclei. Its blood level mainly reflects the proliferation of lymphocytes, in which it is present in the greatest amount. Excretion occurs through the kidneys (normally detected in urine in trace amounts). In renal pathology and infections of the upper and lower urinary tract, the urinary beta-2-microglobulin level rises significantly. It is an early marker of proximal renal tubular damage.
