Beta-carotene

Description

Beta-carotene is a red-orange plant pigment that is a precursor of vitamin A and possesses pronounced antioxidant properties. Beta-carotene deficiency leads to hypovitaminosis A, while its excess leads to carotenodermia. Beta-carotene is the most well-known and widespread form of provitamin A. It differs from other carotenoids by the presence of beta-rings at the ends of the molecule. Beta-carotene is a powerful antioxidant that protects cells from the damaging effects of free radicals, possesses immunostimulating and adaptogenic properties, prevents the occurrence of neoplasms and cardiovascular diseases, supports regenerative processes in the epithelium of the skin and mucous membranes, and ensures the formation of the visual pigment rhodopsin. This test is used for: diagnosis of hypovitaminosis A; diagnosis of carotenodermia. This test is ordered: in malabsorption and suspicion of impaired fat absorption; in jaundice of unclear genesis.
