Description
It is one of the subunits of the dimeric human chorionic gonadotropin molecule, which is secreted in the placental trophoblast and contributes to the maintenance of the corpus luteum and stimulation of progesterone production. The highest peak of secretion is observed at the end of the 1st trimester of pregnancy, with a gradual decline in the 2nd and 3rd trimesters. Determination of beta-hCG concentration is used for diagnosing pregnancy and detecting threatened miscarriage, in prenatal diagnosis of fetal chromosomal abnormalities, and is also a marker of trophoblastic tumors and malignant neoplasms arising from germ cells. As a highly specific and extremely sensitive tumor marker, it is used for the diagnosis of testicular cancer.
