Description
The examination is used to diagnose diseases such as hepatitis, gallstone disease, biliary dyskinesia, Gilbert's syndrome, and others accompanied by impaired bile pigment metabolism ("jaundice"). Bilirubin is a breakdown product of hemoglobin, specifically the part responsible for carrying oxygen - heme. It is a pigment contained in all biological fluids of the body. Total bilirubin is divided into fractions: direct (conjugated) and indirect (free), depending on the presence of a chemical bond with glucuronic acid, which attaches to it in the liver.
The level of indirect bilirubin in the blood changes with increased breakdown of erythrocytes - hemolysis, the cause of which can be various pathological conditions leading to the destruction of erythrocytes in the bloodstream. The level of direct bilirubin increases in liver and biliary tract pathology. The concentration of bilirubin in the blood has diagnostic significance in viral hepatitis, liver cirrhosis, fatty hepatosis, gallstone disease, pancreatic tumors, Gilbert's syndrome, and the intake of certain medications.
The examination results are issued with a doctor's interpretation.
