Total Bilirubin

Description

A breakdown product of hemoglobin, specifically of its heme part, which is responsible for the direct transport of oxygen. A pigment found in all biological fluids of the body. Total bilirubin is divided into conjugated (direct) and free (indirect) depending on the presence of a chemical bond with glucuronic acid, which attaches to it in the liver.
The level of bilirubin in the blood reflects the state of pigment metabolism in the body, which can be disturbed due to congenital and acquired causes. The level of indirect bilirubin in the blood changes with increased breakdown of erythrocytes – hemolysis, caused by various pathological conditions leading to the destruction of red blood cells in the bloodstream. The level of direct bilirubin increases in liver and biliary tract pathology. The concentration of bilirubin in the blood has diagnostic significance in viral hepatitis, liver cirrhosis, fatty hepatosis, gallstone disease, pancreatic tumors, Gilbert's syndrome, and the intake of certain medications.
