Description
The soluble fraction of bilirubin bound to glucuronic acid. Bilirubin bound to glucuronic acid in the liver produces a rapid, direct reaction with the diazo reagent, hence its name. Since the process of bilirubin conjugation with the acid takes place in the liver, direct bilirubin is a marker of its tissue damage, from where it enters the bloodstream. Direct bilirubin levels are tested in hepatitis and other pathological conditions accompanied by parenchymal jaundice.
