Description
D-dimer is a fibrin degradation product, one of the components of a thrombus. It refers to indicators characterizing the fibrinolytic (plasmin) system of the blood. Fibrinolysis is the process of breaking down a fibrin clot. The level of D-dimer in the blood has diagnostic significance in diseases such as deep vein thrombosis, pulmonary embolism, and hereditary coagulopathies. This indicator is important during thrombolytic therapy and pregnancy pathology. An increase in D-dimer levels is normally observed in persons over 80 years of age.
