Description
Produced in the adrenal cortex. The level of the hormone in the blood is an indicator of adrenal activity regarding their production of androgens. The hormone has a weak androgenic effect, metabolizing in peripheral tissues to form testosterone and dihydrotestosterone. In pregnant women, DHEA-S is a precursor of estrogens produced by the placenta. Diurnal fluctuations in DHEA-S concentration in the blood are practically absent, and the rate of excretion from the body is low.
The determination of DHEA-S is an analog of the test for determining 17-KS in daily urine, which is used to assess adrenal function. The test is used to establish the source of increased androgen production in a woman's body.
