Description
Glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase deficiency is one of the most common hereditary causes of hemolytic anemia and is inherited in an X-linked recessive manner. Clinically significant manifestations occur more frequently in men. Depending on the degree of reduction in enzyme activity, a wide spectrum of clinical manifestations can be observed – from almost asymptomatic to severe. A hemolytic crisis can be triggered by various factors, including bacterial or viral infection and the intake of certain medications.
