Description
This antigen is detected in the early stages of the disease along with HBsAg. HBeAg is also called the "infectivity antigen". It is one of the proteins contained in the core of the viral particle and is found in free or bound form in the patient's blood. It is detected during the period of maximum virus activity and serves as a specific marker of the patient's maximum "infectiousness". Most often, HBeAg disappears at the end of the icteric period, but it can circulate in the blood for quite a long time, which is a sign of a high probability of hepatitis chronicity.
