Description
A glycoprotein growth factor produced in the kidneys and, in smaller quantities, in the liver. The main function of the glycoprotein is the activation of erythrocyte production in the bone marrow, as well as the prevention of their premature destruction. The level of erythropoietin depends on the degree of tissue oxygen saturation and increases in response to hypoxia. As the main regulator of erythropoiesis (formation of red blood cells – erythrocytes) in the bone marrow, this indicator is of great clinical importance in the diagnosis of anemic conditions associated with kidney diseases, as well as chemotherapy of malignant tumors.
