Description
TNF is a regulatory glycoprotein, named for its property of causing necrosis of tumor cells. It has two forms: alpha and beta. TNF-alpha participates in the immune response by mediating lymphocyte proliferation, activating leukocyte adhesion to the endothelium, and exerts a pyrogenic effect on the body as a whole. High concentrations of tumor necrosis factor can provoke the development of septic shock in infectious diseases. Determination of TNF concentration in blood is used for therapy selection and prognosis in septic conditions, rheumatoid arthritis, demyelinating autoimmune diseases, and viral hepatitis C. Investigation of TNF quantity in cell culture allows concluding on the synthesis activity of this cytokine by lymphocytes.
