Description
A protein contained in liver cells and macrophages that binds iron for the purpose of storing it in the body. Serum ferritin levels allow for an assessment of its reserves in the body, which is important in the diagnosis of anemias developing in chronic inflammatory diseases. The level of the protein increases during acute inflammatory processes, which allows it to be classified as an acute-phase indicator.
