Description
A glycoprotein hormone synthesized in the anterior lobe of the pituitary gland. Cyclical secretion of gonadotropins, including FSH, promotes the development of the gonads (sex glands) and ensures the secretion of sex hormones. In women, follicle-stimulating hormone regulates the formation of follicles in the ovaries and the biosynthesis of estradiol. In the middle of the menstrual cycle, a peak in FSH concentration is observed, which, together with other factors, initiates the process of ovulation. In men, follicle-stimulating hormone controls spermatogenesis.
The determination of FSH levels is used in the diagnosis of reproductive system pathology in men and women.
