Description
A group of enzymes contained in almost all body tissues participating in reactions of cleaving the phosphoric acid residue from its organic compounds. The optimum activity for this group of enzymes is in the alkaline pH range. The predominant localization of the enzyme in the body is the cells of bone tissue, liver, and kidneys. The level of alkaline phosphatase activity has diagnostic significance in liver and biliary tract pathology, various diseases of bone tissue, including osteoporosis and tumors.
