Description
Phosphorus is a trace element contained mainly in bone tissue (up to 80%), participating in a large number of various metabolic processes, including the synthesis of high-energy compounds and biochemical reactions that provide the cell with energy. It is an important structural component of bone tissue, participates in the formation of nucleic acids, cell membrane components – phospholipids, and activates certain enzymatic processes. Regulation of the constancy of phosphorus content in the body is carried out mainly by parathyroid hormone, calcitonin, and calcitriol. Phosphorus excretion with urine changes during the day, based on this, the most objective results can be obtained by assessing the amount of phosphorus in 24-hour urine. Increased levels are noted in: vitamin D-resistant rickets, hyperparathyroidism, renal failure, leukemia, meningitis, Fanconi syndrome, renal acidosis.
Decrease is possible in: hypoparathyroidism, acromegaly, infectious diseases, vitamin D deficiency with high calcium intake, metastases to bone tissue.
Indications for prescribing the analysis:
1. Diagnosis and monitoring of rickets
2. Diagnosis of kidney diseases
3. Diagnosis of endocrine diseases
