Phosphorus in serum

Description

Phosphorus is a trace element contained mainly in bone tissue (up to 80%) that participates in a large number of various metabolic processes, including the synthesis of macroergic compounds and biochemical reactions that provide the cell with energy. It is an important structural component of bone tissue, participates in the formation of nucleic acids, cell membrane components (phospholipids), and activates certain enzymatic processes. The regulation of phosphorus stability in the body is carried out mainly by parathyroid hormone, calcitonin, and calcitriol. An increase in the level is observed in: diseases of the blood system (multiple myeloma, myelogenous leukemia), diseases of the musculoskeletal system (Paget's disease, metastases to bone tissue), endocrine diseases (hypoparathyroidism, diabetic ketoacidosis, acromegaly), renal failure, malabsorption syndrome, Addison's disease.

A decrease is possible in: familial hypophosphatemic rickets, pellagra, hyperinsulinism, hypopituitarism with GH deficiency (in children), hyperparathyroidism, bacterial septicemia, vitamin D deficiency.

Indications for ordering the analysis:
1. Diagnosis and monitoring of rickets
2. Diagnosis of other diseases of the musculoskeletal system
3. Diagnosis of endocrine diseases
4. Diagnosis of diseases of the blood system
